The first one is loaded when you first select the instrument. Along the bottom are three buttons you can use to switch between the displays. no extra presets), but it’s easy enough to add some reverb, delay, or other effects on them.Īfter you’ve selected one of the instruments, the first display is a graphic representation of the piano, harpsichord or other instrument that you’ve chosen. This category only consists of the straight sounds from each of the instruments (i.e. Last but not least there is the Matellophone category which has a Celesta (the keys will strike a tuned metal bar near a wood resonator), Dulcitone (sound is produced with tuned forks that are hit with felt hammers), J-Celeste (a close-miked JenCo Celeste), Keyboard Glockenspiel and Papageno Bells (a 1750 reproduction). A transpose control is also available to move the keys up or down by a half step. Huitpieds2 is for a second set of 8′ strings. Quatrepieds will enable/disable the 4′ strings, Huitpieds is for the 8′ strings and selecting Luth will mute the 8′ strings making it sound almost like (to me anyway) muted guitar strings. Basically what happens is that certain strings are switched on or off depending on which register you select. You’re able to enable/disable different registers. The harpsichord by Acoustic Samples has a few extra settings the others don’t have. The Plucked String category includes a Blanchet Cembalo (reproduction of a Blanchet harpsichord), Clavichord, Harpsichord (produced by AcousticSamples) and a Spinet (a small harpsichord). Just like with the grand pianos, each of the uprights have some presets included to get you started. In the Upright Piano category there is a Seiler upright grand, a 100-year old Steinway upright grand, a “western saloon” upright with some natural detune, an antique Tack upright (with brass tacks), a Blüthner upright and a 5-octave Ostlind compact. For each of those pianos there are various presets, many of which utilize different effects (reverb, delay, etc.) and some may use filtering and envelope settings.

The Grand Piano category has five models to choose from: Erard Baby Grand, Hybrid Custom (made with parts from three different famous-name pianos), Italian Fazioli (F278), Yamaha C7 and Steinway Model D.

For this review I used the free UVI Workstation.Īfter I launched UVI Workstation, I selected the Key Suite Acoustic from the sound bank directory and was presented with four categories: Grand Pianos, Upright Pianos, Plucked Strings and Metallophone. Supported formats include AU, AAX, VST and Standalone. It will work with 4 GB of RAM, but 8 GB is recommended.

On the Mac you’ll need OS X 10.8+ 64-bit and for the PC you’ll need Windows 8 64-bit (or higher version). It also requires iLok to be installed and it can be activated on up to 3 different computers (with or without iLok dongle).

To install Key Suite Acoustic you’ll need 14GB of free hard disk space and the free UVI Workstation or Falcon. For example, you could use this library with Falcon’s granular synthesis. As is always the case with the UVI sound libraries, you can load Key Suite Acoustic into Falcon for further modulation/manipulation. 125 presets also are on board to get you started. A whopping 55+ GB of samples (22,424 of them to be exact) were created from the acoustic instruments and reduced to 13 GB using FLAC encoding. Many of these instruments were recorded using multiple microphones. Along with all the great samples provided, Key Suite Acoustic also has three filter types, as well as amp/filter envelopes and effects.

In the Plucked String category there’s a Clavichord and an awesome sounding harpsichord which is one of my favorites in this collection. For example, the pianos include a Yamaha C7, Steinway Concert Grand Model D, Erard Baby Grand and there are several others. Some of the instruments included are grand pianos, upright pianos, clavichord, harpsichord, celesta and many more. It includes twenty multi-sampled acoustic instruments. For this issue of SoundBytes Magazine I will take a look at their brand new product called Key Suite Acoustic.

Besides Falcon and their sample-based products, they also have iOS apps as well as effect plugins such as Thorus, Plate and Relayer.

UVI is the music software company that is well known for their high-quality sound libraries and the powerhouse synth/sampler Falcon. Key Suite Acoustic is a fine collection of well-produced acoustic keyboard instruments from UVI – we take it for a test drive.
